Kristen Martyn- Regent Bowerbird

Welcome!

Welcome!

I’m Kristen- a birder, naturalist and entrepreneur. I love exploring places in search of interesting wildlife and nature. While traveling is a passion of mine, I also enjoying exploring my own backyard. I’m passionate about teaching people about the natural world. I have the pleasure of doing so everyday through my business (Wild Birds Unlimited Barrie), speaking engagements and as a tour leader. This blog is a place where I combine my love of birding, wildlife, bird feeding, traveling and business.

Orioles definitely have a sweet tooth, but they ne Orioles definitely have a sweet tooth, but they need lots of protein in their diet to stay healthy! If you feed orioles in your yard, you may notice that they don't go through as many oranges or eat as much jelly as the season progresses. This is because the bulk of their diet is made up of insects during nesting season as they fuel themselves and their young. 🐣 To help them out during this strenuous season, try offering live mealworms or foods with mealworms in them like the Bug, Nut & Berry Cylinder or SuperSuet cakes from @wbubarrie & @wbu.newmarket! šŸ›

Did you know that snakes are avid gardeners? Sprea Did you know that snakes are avid gardeners? Spreading seeds wherever they go 🌱 They don't eat plants, but their food does. When a snake eats a rodent such as a chipmunk, the seeds within the chipmunk's cheek pouches are transferred to the snake's digestive system. Because snakes are equipped to digest animal matter, they cannot break down cellulose and other plant material, leaving the seeds intact. Thanks to their lengthy digestive process and vast home range, by the time a snake excretes droppings containing the seeds, they have been given a longer period for germination and will be dispersed quite a distance away from the originating plant. Through this process, snakes become secondary seed dispersers, and gain the title of ecosystem engineers.

Here's a photo of what the weekend should have loo Here's a photo of what the weekend should have looked like vs. what we actually got for the first long weekend of the spring/summer! The Victoria Day weekend may be over now, but will not be forgotten any time soon! The winds produced by the 'derecho' storm in Ontario and Quebec were incredibly powerful and devastating in parts that they hit. Hoping that you and your families stayed safe over the weekend and made the best of it despite the weather. 🌪

All of our frog species here in Ontario can now be All of our frog species here in Ontario can now be heard calling throughout the day and especially in the evenings. 🐸 One of our most common frog species is the Green Frog. While males and females look very similar in appearance, you can determine the sex of a Green Frog by taking a look at the tympanum - an external eardrum located behind the eye. If the tympanum is larger than the eye, it's a male, and if the tympanum is the same size as the eye, it's a female. You can also determine male from female during breeding season by the bright yellow throats displayed by males. 🐸

Have you ever noticed the hummingbirds in your yar Have you ever noticed the hummingbirds in your yard perch on the same branches all the time? These perches are selected carefully within their territories and act as lookout stations. They are often the perches with the best views, allowing the hummingbirds to scan the area for predators or rival hummingbirds. Both male and female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds aggressively defend these lookouts along with their food supply, and pursue any intruders that invade their space. 🄊
