Have you ever seen a pile of cones like this and w Have you ever seen a pile of cones like this and wondered where they came from? It's possible that they were a Red Squirrel cache! 🌲🐿 Animals who cache (or store food) either have one central cache site, or several sites scattered around their home range. The scatter method is the one squirrels most often use due to their lack of defense when it comes to protecting food from potential theives. The more cache sites, the better chance some will survive not being looted by rival squirrels or other animals. To help them remember where they've stored food, squirrels will often create their cache sites near recognizable landmarks like familiar trees or stumps.🌲

Do you know how to tell the difference between mal Do you know how to tell the difference between male and female Pileated Woodpeckers?πŸ€” With some common backyard woodpecker species like Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers, the difference between sexes is pretty obvious - males have red caps, females don't. But with Pileated Woodpeckers, both males and females don that striking red crest so in order to tell them apart you have to look a little closer at their faces. The answer lies in the mustache - male Pileated Woodpeckers have a red mustache, and females have a black mustache! 🐦 Have you seen this species in your yard or while on hikes?

Koalas are marsupials - a group of mammals who give birth prematurely and continue to raise their young externally, often within a pouch on their lower belly. After birth, a baby Koala (called joeys) remains in it's mother's pouch for six months, and once out of the pouch, will still rely on her for care and protection until one year of age. 🐨🌏

Eastern Chipmunks are beginning to emerge! 🐿 Th Eastern Chipmunks are beginning to emerge! 🐿 These cheeky critters have spent the winter beneath Earth's surface, in elaborate burrows packed full of food they stole from my feeders. πŸ˜‚ Chipmunks aren't exactly in hibernation when they're down there, but they do go into a state of torpor - an involuntary state of hibernation where an animal is able to lower its body temperature, heart rate, metabolic rate, and breathing rate, in order to expend less energy and survive the cold weather. Torpor is different from true hibernation in that it lasts short periods of time (typically days), and allows for the animals to wake, feed, and relieve itself in between. 🐿 Now that the temperatures are rising and chipmunks are remaining active, they'll be seeking out mates and soon after will be raising families - time to get stocked up on peanuts! πŸ₯œ

Tis the season for Northern Cardinal romance πŸ¦πŸ’– and the best way to attract them is by offering their favourite food... safflower seed! Safflower is not only the preferred seed of Northern Cardinals, but also of Rose-breasted and Evening Grosbeaks, House Finches, Chickadees, and more. Plus, it helps keep away some of the species you may not want at your feeders like European Starlings. πŸ˜‰ Offer it in cylinder form from @wbubarrie @wbunewmarket for extra long views - and maybe you'll even see some courtship feeding between males and females! πŸ’‹

This time of year, many birds have switched their This time of year, many birds have switched their diet from a mainly insectivorous one πŸ›, to a largely frugivorous one, meaning that they consume large amounts of fruit. πŸ’ There are few North American birds who rely on fruit as their main food source year-round, but Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings are two of them. These relatively small birds have an advantage that has helped them master the art of berry picking - a 4.5" mouth gape that allows for nearly any native berry to slide down with ease - with the ability to consume 600-1000 berries per day! 🐦

Did you know that Monarch Butterflies are dangerou Did you know that Monarch Butterflies are dangerously close to extinction? 😒 Habitat destruction, agricultural and urban development, pesticide use, and climate change are just a few reasons behind their catastrophic decline. πŸ“‰ So how can we help right at home? Plant native milkweed! Milkweed are monarchs’ host plant - they lay their eggs on it, larvae feed on the leaves, and adults drink the nectar from blooming flowers. Milkweed has been seen as a noxious weed for many years and has been ripped from the landscape, when in reality it is a very beneficial plant to wildlife and humans alike. 🌸
Some other ways to help Monarch Butterflies is to avoid pesticide use whenever possible, support sustainable farming, and urge your governments to take action on climate change. πŸ¦‹

Brightening things up with a beautiful Australian Brightening things up with a beautiful Australian butterfly species πŸ¦‹ the Black Jezebel πŸ¦‹ These brightly decorated butterflies reach an average wingspan of 56mm (just over 2 inches), and are often found in open forested habitat with plenty of their preferred host plants, mistletoes. Adults are very active, pausing only for a few seconds to lap up nectar as they wander from flower to flower; males can sometimes be found taking in moisture from the edges of streams, puddles, and other wet earthy areas. 🌺
