It's time to start watching for these little cuties from the north - Pine Siskins 💛🌲These nomadic finches often travel in large flocks and decide where to go each winter based on seed availability. Pine Siskins are suited for clinging rather than foraging for seed on the ground, and prefer to feed on seeds from conifers like cedar, hemlock, and spruce, and can often be seen flying from tree top to tree top. Listen for their constant flock twittering, along with their distinct call that can sound like a sheet of paper slowly being torn in two. 🐦 Do you think this will be an irruption year for them? We'll have to wait and see what the Winter Finch Report says.. it's almost that time again ❄️😉

The Australian Brushturkey, gweela, scrub turkey, or bush turkey, is a common species found in Eastern Australia. Despite its name, the brushturkey is not actually closely related to the Wild Turkey we have in Ontario. Much like Wild Turkeys, Australian Brushturkeys are not the best fliers, only taking flight to avoid predation or to roost in trees at night and on hot days. 🌏🦃

Eastern (or Red-spotted) Newts begin life in the water as larvae, then grow into a terrestrial stage before maturing. In this terrestrial stage newts are called 'efts'. As efts they can grow to over 8cm in length, and reach a maximum adult size of 14cm including the tail. Eastern Newt efts remain in their terrestrial state for 2 to 3 years before maturing and returning to the water as aquatic adult salamanders. 🦎🌊

Eastern Chipmunks have been busily preparing for winter by caching as much food as possible to help get them through the chilly season. Chipmunks live in intricately laid out underground dens that are approximately 10ft long and 3ft deep, and have several "rooms" for food storage. To help expedite the caching process, chipmunks stuff food into their stretchy, fur-lined cheek pouches which run along much of the body, and are capable of holding up to 70 sunflower seeds, 31 kernels of corn, or 12 acorns. 🐿
