Merganser Yoga, anyone? 😄 The Common Merganser is a duck species native to North America, and can also be found in some areas of Europe. Females (seen here) are beautifully coloured with an overall white & grey speckled body, and auburn face and crest. Males of this species are similar in shape and size but sport a creamy white body with deep forest green plumage covering the head. Though their numbers are in the millions in Canada, Common Merganser populations are still at risk of declining due to habitat loss and climate change. 🦆

Contrary to popular belief, Eastern Tent Caterpill

Contrary to popular belief, Eastern Tent Caterpillars are actually a native species in Ontario. Colonies band together in tent-shaped webs in early spring to help conserve heat and raise their body temperature which allows them to grow more quickly. Through this approximately 3 week period they feed on the leaves of poplars, mountain ash, oak, and many other species to help them grow and transform into moths in late spring. Though large colonies of tent caterpillars may nearly defoliate trees they feed on, their presence will seldom kill the tree. Tent caterpillars are also an excellent food source for many wildlife species including both Black-billed & Yellow-billed Cuckoos, mice, squirrels, and frogs. 🐛🌳

Fall migration is in full swing! 🤩 Many warbler species can be seen migrating through the Simcoe region right now including Cape May, Pine, Black-throated Blue, and so many more. Though they aren't typically feeder visitors, warblers are frequently seen at suet feeders during both spring and fall migration when they are in need of those extra calories to help them reach their southern destinations. Warblers in my yard are particularly fond of SuperSuet offered in a Starling-proof Suet Feeder from @wbubarrie & @wbu.newmarket 🐦 Anyone else getting warblers at their feeders lately?

PSA 🚨 Turtle hatchlings and adult turtles are currently on the move to their wintering areas! This means that they will be traveling through dangerous terrain such as backyards, busy roadways, and ATV & recreation trails to make it to their destinations. Turtles hibernate underwater and typically return to the same place year after year to do so, so when new development like roads or buildings fragment the land, turtles have an even tougher time making it there unharmed. 🚗 If you see a turtle crossing a roadway, give it hand by moving it in the direction it is headed. If you are in Ontario and find an injured turtle, contact @ontarioturtlecc immediately for assistance. 🐢

Black-necked Stork foraging in Australia 🌏 The Black-necked Stork is the only stork species in Australia, and can be found in coastal areas of northern and eastern Australia. They are carnivorous birds and feed on a variety of prey including fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, and some small mammals. Black-necked Stork pairs are monogamous, bonding together for several years or even for life, producing 2 to 4 offspring per breeding season. 🐤

Anyone else have wasps taking over their hummingbird feeders lately? 🐝 They seem so aggressive this time of year! Wasps don't actually become more active or "aggressive" in late summer, there are just more of them. Throughout the spring and summer, workers of the colony spend time feeding and caring for larvae within the hive. Larvae require protein to grow into adult wasps, so the workers feeding the young aren't searching for nectar as feverishly. Once the larvae transition to adulthood, they are no longer being fed and need to leave the hive to find food on their own, this typically happens right around the end of summer. At this time the adult wasps are in need of a sugar fix and natural sources are depleting, but feeders provide an endless supply. 🐝

Have you ever wondered how to tell the difference between male and female Mourning Doves? This can be a tricky task as they are so similar in appearance, but can be done if you look closely. Male Mourning Doves are typically slightly larger than females, and have pinkish-purple patches on on the neck sides with some light colouring reaching down to the chest. Females are smaller in size, with more grey-brown where the males have slight colouring. 🐦

New England Asters are beautifying our transitioning landscape this time of year. 🌸🍂 With vibrant purple flowers and orange centres, these late summer to early fall blooms are highly attractive to pollinators and are an important source of late-season nutrition when there is little else to be found. New England Asters are a great addition to backyard habitats for their looks and value to the ecosystem. Does best in loam or sandy loam soil with mid-level moisture, tolerates part shade or full sun well. Take advantage of these cool(er) early fall days and get planting! 🌸
