It's such a thrilling experience feeling them on your hand and knowing that they trust you enough to take food from you. ❤️ If you want to try this in your yard, start in the morning before you fill your feeders, and offer something extra tasty like live mealworms or peanuts. Sit still with your arm extended and be patient. This often takes some time, so don't be offended if you're avoided the first few times you attempt hand feeding. 🐦

Here's another Ontario owl species for you: the Northern Saw-whet Owl. 🦉 Northern Saw-whets are Ontario's smallest owl weighing in at around just 100 grams. They have a large rounded head, with a near-white facial disc and speckled white markings on the head, and yellow eyes with a black beak. Overall body colour is mottled brown. Males and females are identical in colour, with females averaging 20% larger than males. Saw-whets are secretive in nature due to their size, and seek out dense conifers to roost in throughout the day. Typically the trees chosen for roosting are near an open area available for hunting at night. Saw-whets can be found in any size conifer tree, and are often near the trunk for best protection from predators. During migration Saw-whets have been seen roosting for a day or two in backyard trees and bushes in both urban and rural areas. 🌲🦉

Long-eared Owls are medium in size with a slender body. 🦉 Their buff-coloured faces appear almost square, with long facial discs, long black ear tufts, bright yellow eyes, and a black beak. Their overall body colouring is dark with varied black, brown, and buff pattern, perfect for camouflage against tree trunks. Long-eared Owls typically roost in dense conifer stands but will occasionally roost in more open areas with easy access to fields for hunting at night. During the winter months - particularly when preparing for migration - large groups of Long-eareds can sometimes be found roosting together in conifer trees. 🦉🌲

Wildlife tracks are typically more visible during fall since there is plenty of mud around, and even easier to see as we get into the snowy season. Tracking is a fun activity to try out during the winter months to make it a little more exciting! Pick up a good track ID guide and get out there to see what you can find 🐾👀

Snowy Owls have become quite common winter birds in many parts of Ontario over the past decade, with many individuals returning to the same area year after year. Unlike many owls, Snowys are active throughout the day, and are often spotted perched along roadways, airfields or agricultural fields on top of fence posts, telephone poles, hay bales, in trees, or on the ground. During the early winter & late winter season when there may not be as much snow, it is quite easy to spot a Snowy against the brown landscape, while in the snow they can camouflage entirely to their habitat. While they are not typically communal birds, it is not uncommon to see more than one individual in a small area. ❄️🦉

Pine Grosbeaks can pack away a lot of fruit in one sitting. 🍇 As adults their digestive system can handle all the vegetation, but nestlings aren't well-equipped for it yet, so their parents need to do the work for them. Parent Pine Grosbeaks consume a mix of vegetation and insects and regurgitate it as a paste that is stored in small pouches on either side of the tongue. This helps the nestlings get all the nutrition they need without digestive upset. 🐦🌲

American Tree Sparrows are returning to the Simcoe region - a sure sign of the winter ahead! 🐦❄️ Did you know? American Tree Sparrows need to take in about 30 percent of their body weight in food and a similar percentage in water each day! A full day's fasting can be a death sentence, as their body temperature drops and they can lose nearly a fifth of their weight in that short time. 😥 To attract them to your yard offer millet, sunflower chips, and keep water available at all times (heated bird baths are great for this in the winter months!).
